When travelers look for authentic dining in Split, they are usually searching for more than just a plate of good food. They are looking for a connection to the city's soul, its history, and its people.

If you take a stroll through the narrow stone streets of Diocletian’s Palace as the sun begins to set, you might notice the warm glow of the lights reflecting off the ancient, polished limestone. Decades ago, this daily transition from day to night was a theatrical ritual managed by a single, respected figure in town: the picaferaj.

At Pizzaferaj City, located near the majestic Golden Gate, our name is a direct tribute to this beautiful piece of Split cultural heritage. But who exactly was the picaferaj, and how does an old Mediterranean tradition inspire a modern gourmet pizzeria today?

The Lamplighter of Old Split: Bringing Light to the Stone Streets

In the old Dalmatian dialect, picaferaj (derived from the Italian pizzicaferro) was the city’s official lamplighter. Before modern electricity took over, the streets of Split were illuminated by gas lamps.

Every single evening, the picaferaj would walk through the dark alleys of the palace with a long wooden pole in hand, manually lighting each lamp one by one to keep the citizens safe and guide them home. He was a symbol of warmth, consistency, and light. He knew every corner of the town, every secret alley, and every local family.

To this day, older generations of Split citizens remember the picaferaj with a deep sense of nostalgia, a symbol of a romantic, slower era where things were done carefully, by hand, and with passion.

From Lighting Streets to Inspiring Tables

When we opened our doors in the heart of the Old Town, we knew we wanted to build something that honors this city's rich history. We didn't want to be just another generic tourist restaurant.

While we don't carry wooden poles to light gas lamps, our mission at Pizzaferaj remains exactly the same: we bring light to your table through our passion for premium gastronomy.

For us, bringing "light" means focusing on warmth, exceptional hospitality, and an uncompromising approach to quality. We believe that a great meal has the power to brighten your day, create unforgettable vacation memories, and bring people together—just like the old lamplighter brought the town together under the evening glow.

Crafting Modern Traditions Inside Diocletian’s Palace

Honoring tradition doesn't mean staying stuck in the past. At Pizzaferaj City, we apply that same historical, slow-crafted mindset to our modern menu:

  • The 3-day sourdough ritual

Just like the picaferaj took his time walking through the city, we take our time with our dough. Our Neo-Neapolitan pizzas are completely yeast-free, relying on a 100% natural starter and a 72-hour cold fermentation process.

  • A unique historic vibe

Dining at Pizzaferaj City (Majstora Jurja 8) allows you to experience the palace the way it was meant to be experienced - away from the loudest main streets, hidden in an authentic alley where you can feel the true pulse of Split.

Next time you are wondering where to eat in split for a truly meaningful dinner, follow the light to Pizzaferaj. Secure your table through our online reservation page, sit back, and let us light up your evening with the best sourdough pizza in town.
